The all-new Dodge Charger R/T that Mopar brings to the National Hot Rod Association Funny Car series for 2015 is more than than meets the eye. Take a look:

Engineers, designers and body builders at Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, along with the Don Schumacher Racing team and NHRA officials worked closely for nearly a year to design, prototype, test and refine the new Funny Car body. The new design was unveiled Tuesday, Nov. 4, during the Mopar press conferenceat the SEMA show in Las Vegas. It makes its competition debut at the first NHRA race of the season at Pomona, Calif., next February.

Whereas as some NHRA teams work with outside suppliers for their Funny Car bodies, the 2015 Charger Funny Car body was created inside Fiat Chrysler Automobiles. So the same designers and computerized tools used to create production cars such as the new 2015 Dodge Charger developed the Funny Car body. Prototype bodies were tested and refined in the wind tunnel at the Technical Center in suburban Detroit.

That enabled the team to integrate key styling cues from the production Charger, such as the signature side scallops, into the Funny Car body.

This new Charger Funny Car body replaces a design that is 8 years old. So engineers had the opportunity to use newer strong, lightweight materials such as Kevlar and carbon in the project. The result is a body that is more durable and rigid than the unit it replaces yet weighs just over 100 pounds – while it measures 18 feet long by 6 feet wide by 5 feet tall.

Another key change involved the canopy that covers the driver. Designers moved the canopy rearward on the body and dramatically increased the viewing field for the driver – giving him or her greater visibility forward and to the sides.

At the same time, the current Mopar Funny Car has been successful on the track, collecting two world championships, 68 national titles and posting the first 3-second run in NHRA history. So the development team couldn’t step backward in aerodynamic or track performance.

Managing all the different demands of the project is akin to running a decathlon, said David Bailey, Senior Manager — SRT Motorsports Engineering and Design. On top of that, the team had just delivered a redesigned Dodge Dart Pro Stock body to its NHRA teams last spring.

But the team faced an additional challenge once the project started: Don Schumacher wanted to be able to test the new Mopar body on track this past fall.

“So it was all hands on deck, we’ve got to get this thing done quickly so that he can have some track time on it,” Bailey said. “In essence we built a prototype tool to meet the deadline. And it was a great success when it first ran on the track.”

That sentiment is echoed by driver Matt Hagan, the 2011 Funny Car champion who is contending for the title again this year. “The opportunity to test drive the 2015 Mopar Dodge Charger R/T Funny Car has been just phenomenal, and I can’t get in it again soon enough. The car — how mean it looks, the way it handles, the way it runs on the race track— is simply amazing.”

Final testing will keep the Mopar and Don Schumacher Racing engineers occupied over the winter. But the real test comes next February in Pomona, when the Christmas Tree light turns green.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

MANUFACTURERS SERIES RELEASES 2015 SCHEDULE AND WELCOMES TUCSON, ARIZONA TO LINEUP

KANSAS CITY, Mo., (October 1, 2014) – Comprised of the premier national Chevrolet, Ford and Mopar branded competitive automotive events, the Manufacturers Series welcomes Tucson’s Southwestern International Raceway (SWIR) as the latest host track to join the Series schedule in 2015. The 110-acre drag racing facility located at the Pima County Fairgrounds will feature a spectacular car show, lightning-fast drag racing, manufacturers’ midway and swap meet for each of the “Big Three” American brands.

“Southwest International Raceway is proud to join the Manufacturers Series and we are looking forward to bringing the historic and popular Chevrolet event back to the state of Arizona after a long three-year absence. We are also excited to bring the national Fun Ford and Mega Mopar events to the state for the first time, giving Blue Oval and Mopar fans in the Southwest a venue to race and show-off their favorite brand vehicles,” said Alan Miller, SWIR General Manager.

Southwestern Int’l Raceway joins sister-tracks Palm Beach (March 27 – 29) and Memphis Int’l Raceways (April 10 – 12) in kicking-off the season as the third stop on the Manufacturers Chevy Series tour in 2015,  on May 1 – 3. In addition, SWIR will also host for the first time in Arizona, Fun Ford on Saturday, October 10, and Mega Mopar on Sunday, October 11, to round out their first season of Manufacturers Series events.

“The Manufacturers Chevy, Fun Ford and Mega Mopar Series have been successful events for our Memphis and Palm Beach facilities for years. With the acquisition of Southwestern International Raceway last year, we knew we wanted to add these events to the lineup of events in Tucson.  We look forward to bringing all three Series events to the race fans in Arizona,” said Jason Rittenberry, President & CEO, IRG Sports + Entertainment.

Rockingham Dragway will usher in the 2015 Manufacturers Fun Ford season, May 2 – 3, while Texas Motorplex will lead the way for Mega Mopar Series March 28. On October 17, Palm Beach Int’l Raceway will make history by hosting the first head-to-head Fun Ford vs. Mega Mopar showdown on October 17, giving fans a chance to cheer-on and represent their favorite brand in a family-friendly environment.

On May 16 – 17, Chevy fans will take over Texas Motorplex and Virginia Motorsports Park with a double-header event weekend, while Auto Club Famoso Raceway wraps up the 2015 season, November 7 – 8.
